Does anyone have experience of using Linux with multi-channel analogue audio systems?

Something I’m interested to do with my new project is to use open source software where I can, running a dual boot on the DAW.
The audio hardware I use is Terratec EWS88 multitrack I/O boards, and if it could sync via smpte to reel-to-reel tape all the better.
