im currently in beijing, china and ccmixter does not work here. it says 404 forbidden or sometin like that. I have to use a proxy site but then i cannot download the pellas.

I’m sorry to say this but over 90% of the most hideous, automated server spam comes from huge blocks of Internet addresses from all over China. These bots have brought down the site several times by behavior that is considered just plain lousy and otherwise icky.

If you recall earlier this year (including on the last days of the DJ Vadim contest) we were having a grave amount of problems keeping the site alive — it was these automated bots that were hosing us. As soon as I banned the range of IPs the site stabilized and we haven’t had a problem since.

I can see in our logs that they regularly come back to try to hit us again (and again) so unfortunately, I have to maintain this Draconian wall of shame. I’ve consulted other webmaster-types and there doesn’t seem to whole lot I can do about this…
