About Me
A New Orleans, La. native, Blyss honed his chops in the musically rich culture of the “Big Easy” and in his early years was heavily influenced not only by that citys signature sound but also by the new funk that was coming out of Minneapolis at the time. In school he played trumpet and bass horn in the marching band in addition to playing electric bass and other instruments in many local R&B, funk and rock bands. When he wasnt chopping wood with other musicians in town the younger Blyss time was spent dissecting classic lines and popular bass lines of the day. In his early teens he also studied for a short time with legendary New Orleans bassist Walter Payton, the father of award winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton.
In 1994 Blyss relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area and quickly made a name for himself as a dynamic player both on stage and in the studio. He has since become a first call choice for many area producers including Grammy winner Josh Tone Weaver (Green Day / Santana). He is one of the first on the list for touring artists like New Jersey based alternative rock/pop artist Granian [www.granian.com] and well known, locally based artists like Femi and Tekitha (of the Wu Tang Clan).
Since late 2000 Blyss has been the main bassist for Nya Jade whose video, One Pill can be seen in regular rotation on Vh1 Soul and MTVu. His signature lines can be prominently heard on Nyas Katako Records release My Denial. His bass, writing and production skills can also be heard on ROCKit SCIENCE, the debut album from Bay Area singer Chris Marsol and Altered States by Sound Management recording artists Whirl Magnet.
While playing with an eclectic array of artists Blyss has shared stages with Outkast, the Black Eyed Peas, Evanescence, Maroon 5, The Donnas, Latoya London, the Dave Mathews Band, the Roots, Longview, Crossfade, Better than Ezra, Collective Soul, the Dresdon Dolls and Raphael Saadiq . Blyss has played and recorded with members of Smashmouth and members of Michael Bolton, Shania Twain, Janet Jackson & David Bowie’s backing bands.
