The a cappella and beat were the only sample used.
Original Samples
All other instrumentals were played using a regular midi keyboard and a small selection of VST instruments that ship with the software.
Process
1) I started by listening to the other remixes of the track - this is important.
2) I listened to the lyrics on their own to find some nice hooks - also important, you have to feel it.
3) Imported the vocal into Garageband and set the tempo.
4) Added a simple beat loop - saved project.
5) Opened project in Logic.
6) Using the beat and my favourite vocal hook, I worked on the bassline and horn in a loop until it started to feel like a chorus.
7) Added a few simple additional track layers by picking out some of the high notes from the bassline and horn loop and combining them with other instruments.
Other Notes
The a-cappella by Sol really is first rate, which made it easy to fit the instrumental.
