Maggie was still asleep when Max entered the room. He placed his coffee on the tray table and pulled the blankets up around her to keep her warm.
“What time is it?” she asked, still half asleep. “It’s 9:22,” he told her. “Plenty of time yet. Go back to sleep.” Maggie’s eyes flickered open, and Max could see that she was a million light years away in them. She had gone through hell and he was hoping she’d fight her way back from this one. “It’s bad isn’t it,” she asked him. He just flashed her a smile and kissed her forehead. “We’ve been through worse,” he told her. She tried to laugh but it only came out as a cough and then she closed her eyes once more. Her heartbeat was steady on the monitor and Max kept vigil beside her. He picked up the phone book once again and started reading the yellow pages once again. It was something he had always done, flipping through random pages and reading the words that popped out to him. It was like someone, or something was trying to tell him something. NEW. BEGINNING. SAME PROBLEMS? He put the phone book down.
