When Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote the great poem The Crossing of the Bar one of his friends commented to him that it was a wonderful evocation of a man crossing the threshold from life to death. Tennyson replied that this was not the true meaning but it was just a little ode about hoping he would not feel seasick as he crossed on the ferry from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight!! That said he was happy whatever meaning the reader took out of it
If you want to hear a wonderfully atmospheric rendition of this poem take a listen to the Spooky Mens Chorale version. Its chilling but beautiful. Many thanks to Javolenus for another great performance
