Process
The juxtaposition of the Dream Vocal and the piano from Little town of Bethlehem is fairly straightforward, both tracks left more or less as is. A volume envelope on the piano makes it fade in and out.
The third element, derived from the first few seconds of another piano piece, which sounded flanged to me, as if the tape had just started rolling, was heavily manipulated. First I repitched four instances to follow the bass line, this repeated throughout the track, then I added two further tracks which pitched this material up respectively one and two octaves. These two tracks had volume envelopes, one with three sine curves, the other with four – this meant the two higher octaves were coming in and out at different times. Then I spent some time deleting notes, such that the bass line is occasionally complete but mainly fragmented. And thereafter various FX applied : delay, reverb EQ and compression.
Finally I balanced the three elements against each other as best I could.
