Tools I Used

Cubase 4, Groove Agent 3, Stylus RMX, TC Helicon VoiceLive, Melodyne, Guitar Rig 2, ...

Process

steps:
- find a chord progression I liked
- polish the original vocal track a bit
- create backup harmonies with the chosen chords
- pick basic rhythmic feel (top secret: it's a Bossa Nova)
- create a bridge
- create an ending
- record simple ePiano track
- record bass track
- do a lot of midi doctoring on drum track, change individual drum instruments, merge two different drum VST's, apply FX
- record acoustic guitar track
- record electric guitar track
- pick amps / fx for guitars (top secret, there's generous doubling and two different amp stacks for the eGuitar)
- change / fine tune ending
- one more round doctoring the drum tracks and mix
- final mix
- a bit of mastering

Other Notes

I think the song is an extremely well written pop song, although I honestly couldn't relate that well to the chords in the mock-up at calendarsongs.com; So I totally started over with a rather simple pop chord progression.

CG's vocal track was a delight to work with.
