IDM is the beats (imo) and experimental nature of the work in general. Nobody really agrees on what IDM means, but it I think at the very least is a tip off that it’s serious, non-pop, electronic music. Pure ambient would have VERY minimal and simplistic beats and could be played in the background of an environemnt… to enhance the ambiance.
