Needless to say, I can totally relate! I love the line “let our dreams rise to the surface and waft like incense to perfume our remaining days… ” Super use of the samples. Bravo Deb!

However there is a bit of a glitchy sound near the end and I can’t figure out if it’s in airtone’s sample or a result of some effect. Will have to listen closely to the sources.

Wonderful, wonderful choice of musical bed for this moving poem. Technically, I feel like there is a bit too much over-all low end and the effects on your vox are a bit heavy (making it harder to hear the words). Of course, maybe I’m wrong. :)

I think you are right Kara. I think I will try recording it again as (again) I lost my source file. Luckily I got it into Mixcraft before it disappeared from the SD card! Mysterious! …but I had already mixed down the effects.(I think it’s time for a new card)

Your a wonderful writer debbizo. I enjoy how you put your poems to music. it’s very inspiring. i might give it a go some day.

I have had similar problems with recording voice or acoustic instruments. are you using a condenser microphone? dynamic might be a better way to go if you don’t have anything to deaden the room with. Try turning the gain down and speaking a bit louder if applicable and maybe add some EQ/Reverb. Then, make sure to fade the track out so the back ground hum/ambiance doesn’t automatically cut off into silence. hope this helps.

Thank you septahelix. I am using a Shure SM58 into a Zoom H4n digital recorder. I took the mic and recorder into a cupboard / wardrobe. This is something I really need to work on so any advice on improving vocal recording is greatly appreciated.

I see. Maybe try lining the inside of the wardrobe with some sort of dampening material. the foam sheets people put under their bed covers works all right.

not sure what all you can do with the digital recorder, if it has built in FX and envelopes or what. it probably has a way to fade in/out to ease in to the track. i’ll try to tinker around with some of your uploads and see what works best.

There is now a better recording from the H4n stereo condenser mics here. I put up a large piece of foam on the inside of the cupboard door…only thing is, I should have used a tripod instead of holding the digital recorder! I’ll get there ;-)

considering the quality and quantity of your work, Deb, upgrading your microphone seems worthy of consideration. I am not familiar with the portable Zoom H4n. Don’t know at what point upgrading the recording device would be required to best leverage a better mic.

Thanks trf. I re-recorded it this afternoon with the stereo condenser mics on the H4n. It’s a lot cleaner but just has a very slight rumble from holding the digital recorder - must get a tripod!

I purchased this particular tripod about a year ago- pretty cheap, but it works very well (for a camcorder anyway). It’s pretty light though, so I wouldn’t use it outside if it’s windy.

I agree that the vocals are a tad burried but I like what you did here though. Here’s a video on how to get that unnecessary low out Deb with a high pass filter. It’s just 5 minutes but it’s very powerful :)

Thanks Copperhead. I appreciate the link and will take a look. I’m just uploading what I hope is a better version…so I’m keen to know if it sounds better…or not.

I’ll take another listen :) I don’t know too many technical things so I trying to learn more about the mixing aspect. I was amazed when I put my headphones on and then followed that video to hear that low rumble disappear. If you have 20 tracks going that can really add up.
