The musical setting is superb, calling to mind Grover Washington’s Winelight. The horn shots inserting themselves into the backing vocals just takes this to a whole new level.

This is really superb. Did i mention that? :)

Thanks, my good Admiral.

I had an early version of this where the horn played loudly and frequently, but I spent a lot of time tweaking sound levels and trying to cut the instrumentation down to a point where they would only add something to the vocals rather than distract.

Glad you liked. :)

Yeah, you just made the sun shine in rainy Italy. Lovely work on a great pella.

Thanks my friend - very glad you liked. Makes me feel good about the decision to go with this version. At one point I had a version that was the anti-version of this. :)

Thanks again.

The reason that I care so much for colab’s remixes is: They are always masterfully executed, and this is no exception to the axiom. Love the smooth R&B-funk vibe, Mr. Colab….Sweet stuff indeed!

Wow - that’s big praise. Thanks for that.

I really wanted to find an angle that would do FHCIII justice. I’m thinking it was the right decision. :)

Haha - thank you, Ms. Burns - very glad you liked.

And thanks for the kind words earlier. The answer is that he didn’t get me that, but did give a ceramic airplane that he had painted himself. I think that’s even better. :)

Ah, this was what your tweets were referring to. :) Love the bass and rhodes piano parts. To me, this would be a really tough stem to attempt a remix, in view of the many remixes already done. But colab being colab, you pulled this off smoothly. Nice.

Yeah, the comment about the second half being 100% done - I had an earlier version that was 6 minutes long and took forever to build up without actually adding anything of value - so I cut the first half and all of a sudden I was done. :)

Thanks, but you give me too much credit. :) The guitar and horns are loops, and the other ones I played on the keyboard.

I hadn’t been planning to do a track with traditional instrumentation, but the vocals led the way and I just had to follow. :)

Thanks for the review.

Before hearing airtone’s (thanks for linking): Wow! This really cooks. Got me boppin’ in my chair. Like a cross between Vince Guaraldi and vintage Stevie Wonder. Fantastic energy.
After hearing airtone’s: So now there are two definitive versions. Yours for the party and his for the after hours.

Now that’s a hell of a comment. Thank you.

I started out by hoping I could use some less-than-obvious chords, which for me usually gets me into jazz territory - and then I changed gears and started looking for soul elements.

Thanks for the kind words. Means a good amount to me.

Wow, even after all the the different treatments of this infamous Songboy pella, Colab finds new territory, and keeps it fresh. Tight!

Thanks. That was absolutely a concern for me, but I just knew I wanted to do something with this pella.
I almost overdid it - my original idea was to do an all-synth version - sort of illbient soundscapes without drums - but predictably as clockwork that just didn’t fit the source, and it would have been more of a gimmick than something worth listening to. :)

Thanks for the thumbs up. Much appreciated.

P.S. You have to explain why yours and snowflake’s (and only the two of you) reviews show up with a “translate” button.

Thanks! I have listened to it so many times over the past week that I was completely losing objectivity, and starting to question the whole thing. Really appreciate the positive feedback.

Thanks - particularly the comment about touch/mastering as I spent a lot of time on that (including listening on different headphones - secret mixter gives me the time to listen to it on my iPhone the next morning on my way to Starbucks and make mental notes about errant high frequencies. :)

Thanks again - much appreciated.

Haha - thanks. I tried to stay really true to what the pella told me, and avoid messing up the soundscape with unnecessary elements.

Heck, even the length is old school. Back then literally no tracks went over 3 1/2 minutes. :)

Now that’s very nice to hear. I had the instrumentation done a week ago, and spent the rest of the time tweaking to make sure I didn’t overdo any of the elements - so it’s particularly nice to get this feedback.

Thanks again.

always good to hear different takes on this vocal, I remember it being quite tricky to mix but I think you’ve done a good job with this

If I heard correctly you used the individual vocal stems for your mix, which would have been really tricky to piece together and mix.
I took the easy way out and used the fully mixed one. :)

Thanks for the thumbs up. Glad you liked.

Thanks - that’s a heck of a nice thing to read.

This is a vocalist track though - it wouldn’t be much to speak of without the excellent vocals.

Thanks for the listen and the review. Much appreciated.

Hey you—-the music on this is really bloody good—vocals are good too of course but I love what your playing. Folks have already mentioned a few names, Stevie, Seal ec and I can hear those folks but again its your track with your stamp on it. Good stuff.
Happy Fathers day to you and glad you got to do something fun with your little man

Yeah, it was a good day. Hope you had a great one too.

Thanks for the nice words. The effort with this track was all about the mixing/producing - the musical side was quick and honestly not that complex.

Thanks again.

Thanks my friend. I ended up taking your advise to reduce the vocal reverb (there’s reverb on the source file itself too) - and the shorter version seems to have worked well with people.

Thanks for the support - much appreciated.

This one reminds me of Fatboy Slim. It sounds way more “real” and not as “put together” and electronic as his stuff. Maybe it’s the vocals, I don’t know…Great track here Colab! Very summery, makes you happy on a rainy day like this

Thanks!

I played a few of the instruments and didn’t quantize because I wanted to keep a more loose/live feel.

Thanks for the listen and for leaving a comment. Much appreciated.
