Ahhhhh…. like a fine Cohiba cigar and a nice glass of wine. This is the right combination of instruments and singer. The bass is a very, very realistic upright. You don’t actually have a big old upright do you? :)

Thank you. I wish I did. I’m using Trillion, probably one of the best VSTs ever made IMO. I usually do 2 bass tracks one just for squeaks buzzes rattles and random noises for realism. You can actually hold down some notes on the keyboard to control these while you’re playing and some of it happens automatically.

congrats on this track, Jeris. the ensemble interplay between the voices is very natural & accomplished, the sound is warm & live-feeling, and the whole thing supports C. Burns’ vocal wonderfully. my only post=production suggestion would be to drop the volume on the stand up bass a bit leaning toward steve swallow rather than jaco. but that’s just one man’s opinion. great stuff.

Thanks. Totally agree, I dropped it down a few times and it probably could go down some more. Itll bring out the mids more which it needs.

CiggiBurns was never in a better setting. As a fan of jazz in general I’m glad you’re here. I’m curious as to whether you’re playing, or you have a group of talented musicians, or what percentage, if any, is digital magic (doesn’t sound like it)? Also, any chance of getting some stems uploaded? Great music.

Thank you for the kind words.

I do have some talented musician friends that I plan on recording with here soon, they haven’t been on any of my ccM stuff yet though.

I try to use as much analog gear as possible. I use a ‘73 fender rhodes, hammond and leslie cab, Clavinet through a fender twin and vox wah. I use a lot of virtual instruments too. Ivory for piano, MOTU electric keys, Trillian for bass, Gypsy for violin, trombone, accordion, etc.

Trumpet is my main instrument, but I haven’t played it in years and don’t own one anymore. I’ll have to change that. The next thing on my wishlist is Mojo, which is a horn VST that’s pretty realistic. Until I get that though I guess I’ll be playing samples or recording friends.

For the horns I sometimes just map the sample to the keyboard and play it, sometimes I play it in legato mode, sometimes I map multiple samples, and sometimes I build a quick instrument using SIMPLER in Ableton Live, just depends on the need and the result. Sometimes I have to spend some time really manipulating the sample, that’s why I can’t wait to get Mojo so I can just play it.

Oh, and the drums are usually mixes of sample loops, programming samples and playing Addictive Drums, another vst. I think on one of the tracks I accidentally moved the midi sequence from a piano part to the Addictive drum track and that made it sound like a good drummer was really in sync with the piano, lol, a happy accident I guess. Which was really strange because I usually delete the midi sequence immediately and just deal with audio.

I just uploaded an instrumental version, was there a particular track you wanted isolated, piano, bass, ? This one’s not too bad, I think I usually have like 20 or 30 tracks, probably won’t upload all of the individual parts, but let me know which ones you might want and I’ll be happy to upload those.

Even just the bass is usually a few tracks, I like to record thumps, squeaks, rattles, buzzes and stuff on separate tracks.

Thanks for sharing some of your process. It’s always interesting to hear how someone works. I have no particular requests for uploads but just anytime in future you have a bare sax or trumpet you feel like uploading, those are always good. Of course if I use them they’re likely to end up in something ‘weird’. Hope you don’t mind that.

Oh trust me I don’t mind weird. I’m in a jazz, funk, soul, chill phase right now, but i’ve been into sound design, world, drum ‘n bass, jungle, industrial, etc.

I even went through a phase where I was messin with modular systems. I had a roommate that had some Doepfer stuff and that got me into it. I never got any, but I do have Max for Live, haven’t even started messin with that yet…just never enough time.

You are so good at this loose stuff.

Ciggi has a Cleo Laine quality and you bring it out so well.

Thank you. That’s a good way to put it…”loose”
That’s her style. When you force time onto her vocals it doesn’t really work.
