Process

I decided that Szeder and Words of Gratitude would go together well. Szeder had so much bass in it, the bass end below 120Hz was ten times louder than the mid and high end. I equalisation then multiband compression and a second equalisation just to keep the punch of the snares and kick, and the stab of the bass.

Adding reverb to a voice will usally make it indistinct and push it into the background, but I just wanted to thicken up SackJo's voice. I added reverb only when Sackjo was speaking loudly and none when she was quiet, with a delay so the start of each word was clear. I added gated delay that only came in when SackJo stopped. Then I added some valve distortion to warm up the vocals a little.

Other Notes

I had the basics done within 6 hours then spent ages getting the bass, kick, snares to settle into the mix.

Adding the vocals on the beat divides the music up into sections.

The drums are mainly hi-hats, with snares and kick coming in to give some body to the mix where needed.

Overall, I think its a nice warm wintery piece.
