Process

When I learned that I was assigned Debbizo I was excited as I think she is an excellent writer. Than, I was faced with her extensive catalogue which was quite a pleasure to explore. I appreciated how she shared her working through of various writings and sounds. And I thought it would be fun to do a remix that included uploads that had not yet been remixed. I was happy to discover she had created an instrumental bed so that became the foundation of my remix. As I reviewed Deb's poems, I found phrases that I felt would work rhythmically with the music. I cut and squeezed and effected them just so. I also knew I wanted to include an entire recitation so the impact of her work could be experienced. Unfortunately, there was a lot of hiss on the file for When You Hold Me. I did my best to deal with the hiss, but apparently some of the filtering I did altered the tone of Debbizo's voice. I started added vocal parts as color, and then as rhythmic accents. Originally, I asked Haskel to play guitar for me. I started sketching out the types of things I would have him do, and realized I was satisfied with the simplicity of the parts as I had drafted them, so I just went ahead and played them myself.

Other Notes

Eq, compression and overall sound were a challenge and I am still not totally satisfied. But as Snowflake says, the secret mixter in part is about letting go and jumping in!
