*Patents started in 1790. This lament for life before copyright is fictional, but could have been transmigrated from the depression years into the soul of a one year old with an interest in typing and dictation.

Translation “Patent Leather Blues”

Folks don’t shine they shoes no more, yeah
folks don’t shine they shoes
still shave and cut they hair
‘cept not like they used

I ain’t no cobbler
button spats faster’n you
ain’t no troubler
jus’ singin’ my shiny blues

folks wear today they patent shoe
two-tone brass toe caps
can’t no more be like what it used
a dime for spit on dancing taps

I’m done with casting back forlorn
we must, with progress, future plough
can’t see the science in the corn
comes that ol’ train but once a month now

gonna move on and be glad
soon as I can shed a tear
Lord we done a sin so bad
for to bring the patent here
