I was being treated for cancer when I first heard Numeron’s version of ‘Hypothetically’ (sampling the vocals of Brian Hazard). I wrote some alternative words but in the end I didn’t have the confidence to replace Brian’s beautiful falsetto with my low-key growl. I still don’t, but anyway, here’s the mix.

I’ve been sewn up with catgut but I mean to stay calm
But you were my last shot but you’re not on my arm
Lying on the chaise, half in a daze,
Listening to Nick Cave and Kate Bush
On an old Walkman with a button you push
I’m all black and blue, the sound of music’s hurting me too
But you could maybe change the key if only you cared about me

Baby you didn’t want me when I as slick
So why would you want me now that I’m sick?
What chance have I now, now that the bough has broken in two?
Now I’m under the doctor where am I with you?
Strange as it seems, I seem to keep on holding the dream
That there might still be a way if only you cared about me

It never gets any better but it can get worse
My main pain inflictor is that beautiful nurse
They wheel me in, then they begin
I know they try not to torture me
I conjure up your face, it’s all I can see
I want to know, what if you loved me?
I want to know what would my chances be if you cared about me

I try not to but I want to know
What if you loved me, I want to know
What the odds could be if you cared about me?
