According to Ms. Burns, who wrote it, this lyric is about how English people used to be brought up, (must be well-behaved, not show-off and have good manners)
and the drunken louts of Europe that the British have become today.
We did have a discussion whether my distorted backing vocals should be there or not. Ciggi won.
She’s so great to work with. I like it when she’s bossy with me like she was today.
Jurgen Herrmann plays the saxophone.

Ciggi’s lyric:

When I was a young girl, we were sober and staid
Didn’t get pissed every Friday and forget whom we’d laid.
Or stagger round in a daze, soiled and drunk
Now we’re thick and aggressive and England is sunk.

But it used to be ……

Don’t hog the limelight, be good as gold
Listen to grown-ups and do as you’re told
Respect others’ feelings but hide yours away
Be modest and quiet, you’ll be happy one day.

Turns out that’s crap ‘cause if you follow that code
You’ll get pushed out of life to the side of the road
Respect others’ feelings but aim at the sky
There’s no need for violence but please don’t be shy.

Remember your manners but stay true to yourself
Know your own worth, don’t get left on the shelf
Have a good time but watch where you lie
Don’t spread it around but please don’t be shy.
